Part Time Mandarin Teacher

The Magellan International School (Colegio Internacional Magallanes) in Austin, Texas, is seeking a part time Mandarin teacher. Our rapidly growing multi-cultural school has a Spanish immersion, dual language academic program (English-Spanish) that follows the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) and adds Mandarin as a second language beginning in 3rd grade. We are looking for a dynamic, inspirational educator with a minimum of two years experience teaching Mandarin as a second language in primary classrooms. The teacher must be fluent in Mandarin and proficient in English. A strong background in constructivism, early childhood development, and inquiry based learning, and training and/or experience with the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program are essential. It is vital to be a team player and willing to engage in curriculum development. Austin is one of America´s great cities with a thriving intellectual community gathered around the University of Texas, and a high technology corridor both of which are adjacent to the lovely hill country of Central Texas. The compensation package is highly competitive.

Professional Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (Degree in the Teaching of Mandarin as a second language or elementary education/early childhood development preferred)
  • Experience and/or training in PYP
  • A minimum of three years experience in working with early childhood and/or elementary aged students
  • Experience with authentic assessment practices
  • Experience in integrating IT with teaching
  • Experience with inquiry-based, activity-based and hands-on learning
  • Experience with using a multi-cultural approach to promote learning
  • Experience with writing and planning a curriculum
  • Experience in differentiating teaching techniques
  • Ability to create a stimulating classroom environment
  • Ability to utilize the local context and environment to enhance learning
  • Ability to work with parents in English
  • Ability to teach in English and Mandarin
