Terry Romero, Teacher

Country of Origin:USA
Education: BA in Bilingual Education, MA in Elementary Education

Anna Teresa Saul Romero (Terry Romero) was born, raised and educated in San Antonio TX. She graduated from Providence High School in San Antonio. Soon after, Terry got married and moved to Mexico City, where she formed her family of three children with her husband Miguel Angel and has lived there for the past thirty eight years.

She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Bilingual Education from La Universidad de Las Americas and her Master of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Endicott College, Beverly, Massachusetts. She holds a certificate in teaching English as a Foreign Language, a diploma course in Early Childhood Education, a diploma in Family Orientation and Marriage Counseling, a certificate in Risaterapia (laughter therapy Patch Adams) and Yogakids. She took the course in “Risa terapia” because it fulfilled a need she has of giving and of service. Dressed as a clown she accompanied other teachers and Upper School students to several hospitals taking “a bit of laughter and happiness” to burnt and cancer victims, of which the majority of them were children.

When Terry arrived in Mexico almost four decades ago she had little or no knowledge of the culture. Throughout this time she has studied the history of the country and learned to appreciate her roots. Studying to become an educator inspired her to continue learning about different cultures. While working at The American School Foundation she became familiar with cultures from all over the world. She learned that even though children come from distinct places and have different ways of thinking and learning, in the end they are all children. They all want to be loved and accepted for who they are. Everyone has special needs, be it physical or of the soul. However, there should always be someone there who cares and guides them.

She has worked as an elementary teacher for thirty years in different private schools throughout Mexico City and the metropolitan area. Terry has been working at The American School Foundation for fifteen years. She has taught English in second and third grade, and has been the second grade coordinator for the past two years. While at the ASF she has received training in the International Baccalaureate (IB) and the PYP program since 2001. The IB program has given Terry a different perspective of the world. Due to her extensive years in education prior to her IB training she is able to compare and recognize that there had definitely been a very essential element missing. She is truly passionate of the IB, PYP Program. She believes that the Student Profile is indispensable for the development of a child. Terry plans to continue reinforcing her knowledge of the International Baccalaureate as well as studying a specialty or a second masters in Special Education.

Terry speaks both English and Spanish like a native speaker. Having spoken Spanish at home as a child and perfected it with her years in Mexico she is proud to master the language of her Mexican heritage. She believes that it is extremely important to know more than two languages in order to form global citizens who are open-minded and will contribute to the growth of their country and the world.

Terry is very excited about moving back to her beloved Texas and starting another cycle in her life here in Austin, especially at The Magellan International School. She says, "In a young school there is always room for growth and the only way you can go is up."
