Admissions Process

Thank you for your interest in The Magellan International School!

We understand that any decision related to your child’s education is both personal and profound.  As part of our admissions process, we provide an explanation of the different aspects of our program through our Information Sessions and show you the program in action through our Tours. We strive to demonstrate how MIS can support your child’s intellectual, social and emotional growth and success.

Before you begin an application, if you haven’t done so already we encourage you to visit us virtually – simply click on the link below!

Application decisions are made by an Admissions Committee. The committee reviews all applications and carefully considers every applicant and family. Detailed information about our admissions processes and protocols can be found in our Admissions Policy including statements on diversity, inclusion and non-discrimination.

Please follow these steps to apply, and contact us if you have questions or concerns.

Step 1: Submit an Online Application for Admissions
The first step in the Admissions process is submitting our online application form.  The application is divided into several sections, including contact details, academic and other school information, and short questions.  You will be invoiced via PayPal for the non-refundable application fee of $120.
To begin the application process for the 2020-2021, 2021-2022 or 2022-2023 academic year, fill out our online application form:

Step 2: Parent and Teacher Questionnaires
All Applicants

Once the online application form is submitted, the primary (first) household member will receive instructions for sending a confidential questionnaire to your child’s current teacher.  The form is completed online and will be submitted directly to Magellan. The evaluation form can provide our Admissions Committee with a sense of your child’s personality, strengths, interests and gifts.

Preschool – Kindergarten Applicants

For children entering preschool or kindergarten, the primary contact will also receive instructions for filling out our parent questionnaire, which focuses on your child’s development in the areas of autonomy, social and emotional control, and cognition.

Step 3: Assessment
Preschool – Kindergarten Applicants

The assessment consists of a half day visit to an age appropriate classroom with an assessment of the child’s fine and gross motor skills, social skills and speech development, as well as his/her attention span and motivation as they pertain to his/her chronological age.  (Children who are not fully potty trained will not visit the classroom but will still be assessed.  Acceptance may be conditional until the child is able to visit a classroom.)

1st – 8th Grade Applicants

Applicants complete a combination of written and online assessments on the basic subjects (math and language arts) required for the grade to which he or she has applied. Each applicant will visit Magellan for a shadow day where the candidate will participate in all academic activities and complete the admissions assessment. Additionally, an interview, in English or Spanish is conducted by the teacher leading the assessment.

All Applicants

Assessments will take place between January and June.

Step 4: Parent Interview
The parent interview is an integral part of the admission process. The interview lasts approximately 30 minutes and consists of a meeting between the applicant’s parents and a member of the admissions committee to make sure that our expectations are aligned for your child’s and your family’s experience at Magellan.
Step 5: Admissions Decisions
When the application has been submitted with all supporting documentation, and the assessment and parent interview have been completed, the application will be reviewed by the admissions committee. The committee meets every other week between January and June, and notification of admissions decisions are sent by email within three weeks of process completion.
Step 6: Financial Aid

MIS is committed to supporting a financial aid program for students who lack the financial resources to meet the cost of tuition.
