Design Thinking

While you hear the buzzword “design thinking” in ever increasing frequency in both corporate and educational circles, as an International Baccalaureate World School this concept is not new nor newly integrated into our curriculum. A hallmark of an IB education is building interdisciplinary skills and apply those skills to real world problems. Whether our students are designing prototype communities together in Kinder, developing products from idea through sale in 2nd grade or creating solutions to complex issues in society in 5th grade, they are utilizing creative, collaborative and critical thinking skills to solve complex problems.

What is new regarding Design Thinking at MIS is the depth of integration into the classroom and expansive opportunities for hands-on, practical learning. From Preschool through Middle School, teachers participate in ongoing professional development on design thinking principles, and are mentored by the school’s Innovation Director and Innovation Section Leads (Preschool, Primary School & Middle School). Students are applying design cycles to work across disciplines and are enthusiastic problem solvers in the classroom, i.lab and beyond.
