Middle Years Programme
The Magellan International School offers the first three years of the IB’s Middle Years Programme. At Magellan, our Middle School students are encouraged to develop personal understanding, emerging sense of self and community responsibility. Students are challenged to: connect their learning experiences to their lives and understanding of the world; use concepts to explore significance and to examine their knowledge holistically; learn by applying knowledge and skills in unfamiliar contexts; and become caring members of their community through service.
The inquiry-based classroom in Middle School stimulates the natural curiosity of students and encourages them to ask questions. This approach emphasizes real-life situations, decision-making, problem solving, research, and action. Students explore concepts of and experience what it is like to think and act like a historian, scientist, engineer or a mathematician.
As inquirers, students construct their own meaning, rather than relying on their teachers to do so for them. Consequently, students develop deeper and more profound understanding.
The academic curriculum of the MYP encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world through a broad focus on a variety of subjects. Curriculum is focused on eight subject groups:
- Language Acquisition
- Language and Literature
- Individuals and Societies
- Physical and Health Education
The Middle School curriculum at Magellan focuses on the exploration of the following global contexts:
- Identities and Relationships
- Personal and Cultural Identity
- Orientations in Space and Time
- Scientific and Technical Innovation
- Fairness and Development
- Globalization and Sustainability
