STEM, Design Thinking and Innovation

“STEM” campaigns in education – strong curricular focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – have emerged over the last few decades as the global advantage held by the United States in technical innovation dwindled. As our national testing results vs. the rest of the world have inverted – with the US falling behind most G20 peers – schools are ramping up their science and math curriculum and spending time and resources preparing students with knowledge beneficial for success on standardized tests.

Only research has shown time and again that it is not facts and figures that drives innovation and success, it’s the ability of individuals to put that knowledge to use solving problems creatively within the framework of a team that can communicate, collaborate and confidently risk failure. This is why the International Baccalaureate has spent decades – and MIS since inception – focusing its STEM-based learning on mastering concepts, building complexity within the disciplines and putting them to work to solve real hands-on problems.

With the integration of Design Thinking into our curriculum and continuous student opportunities to “make” through practical, curricular aligned experience in our i.lab for design + making, our kids are building a strong, deep foundation across the STEM disciplines with practical, problem solving skills.
