Your Questions About Our IB Spanish Immersion Preschool

List of 6 frequently asked questions.

  • What is Spanish immersion?

In our preschool program, students are immersed in Spanish for approximately 90% of the school day. Children learn language naturally through play, songs, stories, and daily routines with native-speaking teachers. This approach helps students build fluency and confidence without requiring prior Spanish experience.
  • Does my child need to speak Spanish before enrolling?

No. The majority of our preschool students begin with little or no prior Spanish experience. Our teachers are trained to support beginners and help children build understanding and confidence naturally through daily immersion
  • What does IB mean in Preschool?

Magellan is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. In preschool, the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) focuses on inquiry-based learning, where children explore big ideas through play, questioning, and hands-on discovery. Rather than memorizing facts, students develop curiosity, independence, and a global perspective from an early age.
  • What does a typical day look like in preschool?

Each morning begins with teachers greeting students at arrival, walking them hand-in-hand into the building to start their day with warmth and connection. Preschoolers participate in a Spanish-language morning meeting, followed by inquiry-based learning centers, outdoor play, story time, and guided exploration. Language development is woven naturally throughout the day through conversation, songs, and hands-on activities, all within a structured, nurturing environment.
  • How is the IB Primary Years Program different from Montessori?

While both IB and Montessori value curiosity and hands-on learning, they are different educational models. The IB Primary Years Program (PYP) uses guided inquiry and collaborative learning to explore big ideas across subject areas. Montessori programs emphasize independent work with specific classroom materials. At Magellan, teachers actively guide exploration within a structured, globally recognized IB framework.
  • How is Magellan’s preschool different from daycare?

While many daycare programs focus primarily on supervision and care, Magellan’s preschool follows the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program within a Spanish immersion model. Students build early literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional skills through structured, inquiry-based learning in a nurturing environment. Families choose Magellan for both the warmth of our community and the strong academic foundation that continues through elementary, middle, and high school.
